Most of the anxiety around a portrait session comes from not knowing what to expect. Here’s what actually helps, in order of how much it matters.
**Sleep and hydration beat any last-minute skincare routine.** This sounds obvious, but the single biggest factor in how someone looks on camera is how rested they are the day before.
**Bring options, not just one outfit.** Solid colors generally photograph better than busy patterns. Bringing two or three choices means we can pick what actually works once we see the light on location.
**Arrive with a few minutes to spare.** Rushing in flustered shows on camera far more than people expect. A calm five minutes to settle in before the first frame makes a visible difference.
**Don’t over-rehearse a ‘photo face.’** The most-used photos from any session are almost never the deliberately posed ones — they’re the moments in between, while genuinely talking or laughing about something unrelated to the camera.
**Trust the direction.** A slight chin adjustment or shoulder turn that feels strange in the moment usually looks completely natural in the final frame — the camera sees angles differently than a mirror does.
Beyond that, there’s genuinely not much to prepare. The rest is just showing up and letting the session do its job.
